It’s had a few customizations like custom Ergonomic Valve Guide (EVG) system, Harmonic Waterkey Plugs and special vibrating Z braces.
The original parts are included with the horn as well.
Harmonic Waterkey Plugs were made to eliminate nodal tone disruptions and allow proper nodal tone frequencies to flow smoothly inside the slide crook and/or body tube and over the waterkey dispensary.
- It features a brass plug that sits in the waterkey cup and has a brass stem that fills the inside section of the waterkey dispensary. This results in lever waterkey assemblies responding acoustically similar to push-button waterkey assemblies.
- The waterkey plug, when effectively seated into the waterkey cup, acts as a harmonic balancer weight while allowing for the plug’s stem to fill the empty chamber space inside the waterkey dispensary.
- The purpose of making the waterkey plug out of brass is to avoid causing adverse distortions and suppression of the instrument’s natural resonance—which can occur from having a full rubber or full cork material.
- What allows for an effective seal of the plug onto the waterkey dispensary is the use of a “Gummi Kork” O-ring that is inlaid flush onto the beveled lower base of the plug’s stem—to prevent any air leakage from coming out of the slide crook and/or body tubing.
The results of effectively “plugging” the waterkey dispensary are:
- Having an even flow and distribution of nodal tones throughout the general section of tubing; and
- Having a true, balanced response and resistance to the player when sounding the instrument.
Ergonomic Valve Guide (EVG) is:
- A guiding piece that fits into the spring barrel valve guide—either made of black ABS resin or solid titanium.
- A brass, nickel-plated bottom ring designed to fit over the outside diameter of the spring barrel.
- A brass, nickel-plated top ring designed to fasten in between the top of the spring barrel and the underside of the OEM valve stem.
- A coated high-carbon steel valve spring that is durable to oils and condensation and seats in between the top and bottom EVG rings.
The focus of this new valve guide design is to minimize valve disruptions or inefficiencies that are normally initiated on the inside of the pistons’ spring barrels. These defects are mainly due to OEM valve guides being made of poor tolerances and quality materials. This results in upstroke “catches” or valve “hiccups,” and does not permit players to maximize the full capability of their instrument.
The B.A.C. Ergonomic Valve Guides were made to:
- Eliminate valve catching issues that take place inside of the spring barrel;
- Improve vertical and rotational valve alignment thus reducing porting and airflow disruptions; and
- Ensure the valve is able to move freely and yet quietly* while utilizing the EVGs.
*Quietly is being used as a general term here since each player has a different approach to what “quiet” valve action sounds like.
